This pumpkin is the cross 1940 Urena x Self. The 1940 Urena is an extremely successful producer having grown 2356 Booth (California state record) and 2656 Paton (2nd official heaviest pumpkin ever grown of all time) among many other amazing and ginormous pumpkins, all orange, dense, extremely heavy, and great shaped pumpkins! My pumpkin contains these incredible world class genetics while carrying on the great orange color, heavy, perfect shape traits (arguably one of the most symmetric best shapes of all the 1940 progeny), as well as having the most vigorous healthiest plant I have ever seen! The self ensures these genetics are locked in on both sides of the genetic tree. Meaning this pumpkin’s traits will likely be reproduced in its offspring. I know 1587 pounds might not sound like much especially when surrounded by many other pumpkins seemingly much better as they made it to the scale heavier but considering where it was grown, Spearfish, SD, which is arguably one of the most challenging and unforgiving places to grow giant pumpkins, it is quite impressive. For example some of the challenges include: Night time temperatures are quite cold (low 50s F) and day time temperatures over 95 degrees F are common. Pumpkins grow the most during the night so cold night temperatures really hinder potential growth. A day of 110 degrees beginning of August really hurt this pumpkin’s potential. It was growing 35-40 pounds consistently then dropped to 10-15 and never picked back up again. The temperature swings are insane too going from 100+ to freezing and killing your whole plant in less than 24 hours has happened. Snow in early September and late May is not a rare occurrence either. The native soil is impenetrable solid red clay that has a pH of over 8.5. Can’t grow at all in that soil and this requires extensive amending. Moreover, there are frequent hail storms throughout the season that without good protection would end your season early.
Also for reference this is the largest pumpkin grown for a radius of several hundred miles by several hundred pounds! This shows you this pumpkin was a real feat considering where it was grown when it was basically its final weight with 2 months left in the growing season! Given the whole season and proper conditions, this pumpkin could have been absolutely enormous!
